Vandana Shiva

Dr Vandana Shiva is a world-renowned environmental thinker and activist. She is the founder of the Research Foundation for Science, Technology and Ecology, as well as Navdanya, and Earth University in Uttarakhand, India.

Ecofeminist, food sovereignty advocate and anti-globalisation author, she has played a major role in global ecofeminism as well as a figurehead of the alter-globalisation movement. Vandana has received several awards for her services in human rights, ecology and conservation. Upon receiving her Ph.D in physics in 1978, Vandana’s attention was quickly drawn towards ecological concerns.

Author of multiple publications covering a range of topics including globalisation, food systems, ecofeminism, monocultures, earth democracy and biodiversity. These books include “Soil not Oil” and “Reclaiming the Commons” amongst others.

She has helped grassroots organisations of the green movement in Africa, Asia, Latin America, Ireland, Switzerland, and Austria to oppose advances in genetic engineering that effect agricultural development. An advisor to governments in India and abroad with countries such as Sri Lanka as well as non-governmental organisations
